Band History and Formation

The pipe band first formed in the latter part of 2018 when John Brodie was approached by a few individuals seeking to learn to play the bagpipes. After a short time John invited a number of other pipers along to assist in the tuition including Mick Barnard & Bob Gladdis and word spread among the Islands small contingent of individual pipers. The band was officially formed before taking part in “The Battles O’er” event marking the centenary of the end of the first World War, at 6am the band played the 3/4 retreat march “The Battles O’er” to mark the signing of the armistice along with thousands of other pipers and pipe bands around the globe.

Unfortunately, as the band was getting started Covid came along and disrupted the growth of the band by stopping practicing and playing together. After the end of restrictions numbers dwindled, people stopped playing or moved away but with a small group of accomplished and experienced pipers still at its heart numbers have started to grow with at present six learners starting their journey to become full playing members of the band. We also have a small Drum Corps which we would like to see grow with new members joining.

At this time we are self-funded. Members financing their own uniform items with help from the band and some drum pads and practice chanters can be provided. We hope that eventually we could make this opportunity accessible to all with an interest, through sponsorship. At the moment we help to fund the band through income from performances and private bookings.

The IOW Highland Pipes & Drums have become a popular feature of local events as we showcase some of the traditional music of Scotland that is enjoyed around the world. If you see us at local events and carnivals or at private events in the bands distinctive Black Stewart kilts come up and say hello.
